Breaking Into Ballet Dancing

PostDateIconThursday, 01 October 2009 10:55 | PostAuthorIconWritten by Sarah Wilkiamson |
Starting off in ballet can be difficult to say the least, especially when taking into consideration all the hard work that will be required of you in this sport or art form, whichever you happen to see it as. There will be plenty of obstacles to overcome and the first major one will be your level of fitness. Even if you think you are in good physical condition already, ballet will test that when you try to stand on the tips of your toes and spin at the same time. You can say you are fit if you are able to perform that move without getting dizzy and hurting yourself.

When attempting to keep up a healthy way of living, then you will have to pay attention to your dieting and exercising habits. It is important to ensure a high energy diet so that you will be able to perform on a daily basis should it ever be required. This is because ballet can be very demanding and it is a common occurrence for beginners to want to give up right away, because they get the feeling they are accomplishing nothing. Just always remember that it will take a lot of practice and then some if you want to get anywhere in ballet and that is even true for those who don't have any intentions of doing this competitively or for performances.

Remember to choose the right shoes. There are some ballet dancers that opt to wear soft shoes, but beginners tend to use pointe shoes. The reason for this is that it forces the foot upright and even helps to build toe strength. Of course, there are forms of ballet you can take that won't require you to point your toes very much, and if you have found that you have a difficult time with the traditional ballet lessons. No matter which one you choose, it is definitely going to help keep you in shape and keep you feeling good.

Those aiming to be competitive ballet dancers should be able to show energy while performing. It is not enough to just be there, because it will be necessary to show the audience that you like what you are doing and to be energetic in your performance. The ultimate goal of any ballet performer is to make the audience believe you are the only dancer and that is something that can be very difficult to do.

Now comes time to decide what you should wear to dance class. Usually for dance class dancers tend to choose the simple leotards and tights since they allow for easier movement. When you are going to be in a recital, though, it is normally more appropriate to wear something a bit more fancy and traditional as a tutu but that is up to the dance instructor and what is required.

These are just a few of the basics that are involved with ballet. There are many things to learn and many more questions to ask. You'll need to find a good instructor, which shouldn't be difficult if you live in a large city. If you live somewhere a little smaller then you will need to go looking, but believe me the end will definitely justify the means.
